Job Description
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees that manages and conserves the City?s water supply. We deliver 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water per day to 8.5 million New York City residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York, and we collect and treat an average of 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day.
The Bureau of Public Affairs manages the public information, community outreach and legislative affairs of the Agency. It is responsible for all press and media inquiries, environmental education, special projects and events, production of all public information, both print and electronic, and has responsibility for managing the graphic and photographic needs of all the bureaus.
The Bureau?s Communications Unit is responsible for, among other things, all agency contact with the media and all information released to the public. In cooperation with the Mayor?s press office, and with guidance from the department?s Communications Director, the Press Secretary will create and implement plans for proactive media coverage that educates and informs the general public about the scope and importance of the department?s work; stay current with media reports on environmental-related articles and programs. These activities are critical to the successful functioning of the agency.
The Bureau seeks to hire a Press Secretary who will assist in managing a communications, web and graphics team. The candidate will coordinate major press events and direct crisis communications during emergencies, coordinate message with City Hall and other city, state and federal agencies, write speeches and provide official agency response to inquiries from news outlets. He/She will also respond to general inquiries from citizens about issues of concern; prepare draft press releases and press advisories; and contribute to the department?s weekly newsletter. He/She will be part of a rotation that assumes 24 hour on-call duty to ensure evening and weekend coverage for DEP?s press office. Candidate will also oversee and promote new programs of the Agency through wider social media presence with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and oversee the department?s website and weekly newsletter. Candidate should have the ability to work with a diverse range of people and build mutually beneficial relationships and networks.
Qualifications
A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with 24 credits in English, journalism or public relations, plus five (5) years of full-time paid experience in public relations, journalism or advertising, including two (2) years in an administrative, supervisory or consultative capacity; or A combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" above. Graduate study in English, journalism, or public relations may be substituted for up to one year of required experience. However, all candidates must have at least two (2) years of administrative, supervisory, or consultative experience in public relations, journalism or advertising.
Preferred Skills
Must possess strong verbal & written communication skills.
Experience speaking on the record with reporters.
Ability to recognize and adapt to changing circumstances, particularly during stressful times.
Experience with video and digital media communications a plus.
A driver?s license valid in the State of New York is preferred.
